The Power of Choice

Using a Choice Theory Framework to Inform Parenting, Self-Care, and Life Satisfaction

Choice Theory was developed by renowned psychiatrist, William Glasser, and provides a powerful framework for understanding human behavior and building healthy relationships. At its heart, Choice Theory posits that all of our choices and actions are driven by five basic human needs: survival/security, love/belonging, power/achievement, freedom/independence, and fun/entertainment. These needs shape how we think, feel, and act; and when they’re unmet, we often experience frustration, conflict, or stagnance.

For parents and caregivers, Glasser’s model offers a helpful way to reflect on the balance in our own lives while also offering valuable insights into how to foster stronger connections with children, encourage positive behavior, and support their emotional and psychological growth. By assessing which of these needs are being met and which might need more attention, we can better understand our own choices and emotions while also modeling healthy behavior for our children. And, in deepening our understanding of these needs, we not only help our children thrive but also attend to our own well-being—which ultimately helps us become more present, effective, and compassionate caregivers.

Interested in learning more?

The Glasser Institute for Choice Theory is a great resource for getting better acquainted with the foundations of this framework.

For a more in depth look at Choice Theory specifically through the lens of parenting, check out our handout: Understanding Choice Theory From a Parent Perspective, which includes parenting tips and thought-provoking questions for your own self-reflection.

This Choice Theory Self-Assessment offers an opportunity to explore which basic needs are being met (or not met) and how your own choices and behaviors are attempting to fulfill those needs.

A Note from the Nurse’s Desk

The flu (influenza) has affected some of our students at Evergreen. The symptoms of flu include:

  •  Fever (or feeling feverish/chills)

  •  Cough

  •  Sore throat

  •  Runny or stuffy nose

  •  Muscle or body aches

  •  Headaches

  •  Feeling very tired

 Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults). If your child experiences any of these symptoms, please take them to see a medical provider as soon as possible and inform the provider that your child has been exposed to flu. If it is flu, the medical provider may choose to give your child an antiviral medication to lessen the severity of the illness and to help prevent the spread of the virus. If your child is diagnosed with flu, please let the school know. To prevent the spread of illness, please keep your child home until they have no fever without the use of medication for at least 24 hours.

For more information about the flu, please review the included fact sheet. Thank you for helping to make our school a healthy and safe place for learning.

Sincerely,
Nurse Amy

As a parent, you can also help prevent the spread of illness by:

  •  Keeping your child at home if they are showing signs of illness

  •  Washing your hands, and encouraging your child to wash their hands regularly

  •  Getting a yearly flu shot

The Importance of Self-Care for Parents & Caregivers

The Importance of Self-Care for Parents & Caregivers

Parenting is one of the most fulfilling roles we can take on and also one of the most demanding. Between the everyday routines of raising children and caring for our families, striving for success at work, being an active community member, confronting the larger issues and uncertainties of the world, and the list goes on–it can feel impossible to find balance and time for ourselves. With so many micro- and macro-responsibilities needing our attention, self-care often gets pushed to the bottom of the list. Yet, tending to our mental, emotional, and physical well-being is not just an act of self-preservation—it’s an essential part of being the best parent we can be

When we prioritize self-care, we equip ourselves to better manage the demands of parenting and our lives as a whole. Whether it’s finding time for rest, seeking support, or engaging in activities that replenish us, actively participating in self-care directly strengthens our resilience. We experience a greater capacity for navigating hard things when our needs are met. Self-care also allows us to process trauma, manage stress, and nurture our emotional health, ensuring we’re present and responsive for our kids.

More importantly, our self-care habits also set an example. We know children learn through observation, and when they see us taking time to care for ourselves—whether by exercising, getting outside, expressing our emotions, unplugging from devices, making time for a hobby or cause that’s meaningful to us, etc.—they internalize those lessons. Modeling healthy coping strategies and life balance through our choices helps kids and teens develop the tools to create their own balance and face life’s challenges with confidence and grace.

By taking care of ourselves, we create a ripple effect: we’re better able to support our children through life’s ups and downs while fostering a legacy of resilience and thoughtful well-being for generations to come. Let’s remind ourselves that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s a vital part of the love we give to our families.

Interested in diving deeper into your own self-care plan?

Self-Reflection is an important piece of self-care and this quick Personal Self-Care Assessment is a useful tool to help you discover which areas could use some “attention with intention,” so you can better care for yourself and ensure your needs are met.

Tomorrow is our annual Community Circle in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Community Circles are student led and each class has an opportunity to reflect on content and share their ideas with the collective via student representatives. Families are welcome to attend. Community Circles are held in the gym just after morning announcements at 8:45am.

Remember that there is no school on Monday, 1/20.

There are so many wonderful community service events available to make next Monday a Day-On rather than a day off.

AVLToday posted a great list of ways you can show up on MLK Day as well as linking to a list of assorted volunteer opportunities throughout Asheville.

Marian Wright Edelman is an American activist for civil rights and children's rights. She is the founder and president emerita of the Children's Defense Fund. She influenced leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr, and Hillary Clinton. Wikipedia

Happy New Year Evergreen!

It’s great to have everyone back at school, and I hope you all had a wonderful break and got a chance to refresh.

As we begin this new year, I’ve been taking some time to reflect on last year and my gratitude for all of you and how you each contribute to our community. And, thinking ahead to the new year and my hopes and goals for it, I am excited to see what comes out of this year and how we we will all grow together. For me, the utmost importance is that Evergreen is a safe, inclusive, and joyful learning environment for all, and my work and goals in my role revolve around this.

As always, our partnership with families and the broader community is an essential part of this, and I am looking forward to collaborating with all of you throughout this year.

We were surprised and grateful to receive contributions from 3 separate schools in December, who each sent grocery/merchandise gift cards for us to give to families and staff as a way to support our hurricane recovery. It is really heartwarming to feel the love from all over the state.

Please join us next Monday, January 13th, for our first Community Circle of the year. It will take place from 8:45-9:15am in the Evergreen gym and is one of only a few times each year that the whole school gathers.

A few important housekeeping notes:

  • We will be unable to use the lower lot for a period of time while they do creek work, starting next week. Please read communications to come about what afternoon pickup will look like until we have the lower lot available again.

  • A draft calendar for the 2025-2026 school year will go to the board for discussion this month with a vote scheduled for February.

  • Reminder that our calendar and weather related closures do not necessarily align with Asheville City and Buncombe County schools. Our year long Evergreen Calendar can be found on our website or easily added to your own google calendar.

Grandfriends’ Day - February 14th

Grandfriends’ Day invitations went out earlier this week. If you missed adding your Grandfriends to the invite list, you can send them the RSVP link directly by clicking the green button and forwarding them the link!

New this year: guests can add a Valentine Greeting in the form of a poster that will be delivered to classrooms for a small donation.

Around Campus

Looping Lot

Debris from cleaning up our campus is being held in the Looping Lot until it can be picked up. Therefore, there will be less room for cars and more room for patience as we navigate Monday traffic. Thank you in advance for extending grace and courtesy to our traffic team as they direct Looping Lot traffic with a few added obstacles.

Oakes Trail

Please practice Leave No Trace principles by staying on established paths. The Oakes Trail down to the parking lot does NOT run down through the East Asheville Rec Center’s Parking Lot. Please help us maintain a good relationship with our neighbors by refraining from using this path. We will rehang the Trail Closed sign soon. In the meanwhile, please use the Oakes Trail which runs parallel with the driveway.

Enrollment Season has begun!

Let your friends and neighbors know: Open Enrollment runs through March 31st. The lottery will be drawn on April 8th!

Thank you Volunteers!

Your hours are valued!

Having a log accounting our community’s significant investment in our collective success helps us when we are applying for grants from other funding sources. Other funding sources = less need for monetary donations from families.

You can account for hours as you go, or collectively for a week, or month, or more!
