Conference days child care info

If you need child care during conferences on the 10th or 11th, you may bring them to EverAfter. This is free of charge! Due to conferences being split between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, one being during regular after school time and one during an all day care day, we have two different plans, so please read carefully:

  • For Thursday afternoon, the 10th, we will host drop-in care on the lower playground and Multipurpose room from 3:55-8:00 (SEE ATTACHED MAP!)

  • For Friday morning, the 11th, we will host drop-in care in the gym.

In both cases, you will need to bring your child(ren) in with you, speak with EverAfter staff, and sign them in and out. You MAY NOT just send them to wherever you see other kids. It'll take you a few minutes to do that; please plan accordingly so that you are not late to your conference time--your child's teachers' time is both valuable AND limited!

We also ask that if you prefer not to use EverAfter, please keep your children with you, or just outside of whatever classroom you are conferencing in. Unsupervised kids will be sent back to their parents or to the main office. Thanks for keeping kids supervised and safe!

Additionally, if you need all day care for your child on the 11th, and you are registered for EverAfter, please refer to information in the EverAfter Newsletter dated 4/3. For questions, please reach out to EverAfter Director James Wilson.

All Around Artsy Open House

Join us as we celebrate Multidisciplinary Artist and Evergreen Alum, Kira Bursky, in her first Asheville pop-up at Resurrection Studios Collective.

Kira will be on-hand to chat with guests and will talk about her journey as an artist.

April 22nd : 3:00-5:00pm

Her collection spans from prints to wearable art, she even has a colorful little vending machine that dispenses mini prints. Kira has ensured that her bold style comes in all price points!

Let’s gather to support this ‘Evergrown’ community member! Or stop in anytime between now and 4/30!

*Parents please note that a portion of the collection are powerful and surreal depictions of Helene, you can preview these pieces and more, and follow Kira via her Instagram: All Around Artsy!

(Think Kira looks familiar? Kira’s Mom, Lauren, is our artsy EverAfter Staffer!
If you’ve had fabulous art coming home from EverAfter, that is Lauren’s influence!)

After School Dismissal

Once your child has been sent to Ever After, they must be signed out from the gym by a caregiver. If you are in the traffic line and your child is in Ever After, you will be asked to park so you can sign them out in the gym. Please do not request that staff retrieve them via walkie or by foot.

The beginning of EverAfter is a busy time and if students are not signed out by their caregiver with EverAfter Staff it is very hard to get an accurate count of how many children we are caring for, resulting in staff searching for ‘lost’ children, causing stress and inefficiency.

The Power of the Pause: Helping Kids Build Impulse Control

Impulse control is a crucial skill that helps children and teens make thoughtful decisions, manage emotions, and build strong relationships. Research shows that children with strong impulse control tend to perform better academically, have fewer behavioral challenges, and experience greater long-term success. In fact, the famous "Marshmallow Test" by psychologist Walter Mischel found that children who delayed gratification were more likely to have higher SAT scores, better stress management, and healthier social relationships later in life.

Since impulse control is a developing skill throughout childhood and adolescence, parents play a key role in strengthening it at home. Here are some simple, practical strategies to help:

🛑 Model the "Pause and Think" Strategy: Before reacting to a frustrating situation, verbalize your thought process: “I really want to interrupt right now, but I’m going to take a deep breath and wait.”

🎲 Use Games to Make Self-Control Fun: Activities like Simon Says, Red Light, Green Light, or even board games requiring turn-taking help children practice patience and delayed gratification.

📆 Create Predictable Routines: When kids know what to expect, they are less likely to act impulsively. Structured routines help them learn self-regulation skills.

🗣️ Encourage Self-Talk: Teach children to use phrases like “Is this a big deal or a small deal?” or “What might happen if I do this?” before making a decision.

🌟 Praise Effort, Not Just Outcomes: When children successfully manage their impulses, acknowledge their effort: “I noticed you stopped and thought before grabbing that toy—great job thinking first!”

Developing impulse control is a gradual process, but with consistent practice, children can learn to manage their impulses effectively—setting them up for lifelong success.

Thanks to everyone who has signed up and shared the fundraiser!

We hit the 67% milestone today, thank you to all the donors who have gotten us off to such a great start! If you’ve been waiting, now is the time to set up your child’s page and share with family, friends, and co-workers!

Chris Weaver having fun!

Tourney Trivia from Ms. Diedre!

Capture The Hoops began in 2009 as a 3rd grade, Friday afternoon activity, introduced by new-to-Evergreen teacher, Chris Weaver. Years earlier, Mr. Chris had developed this modified Capture the Flag style game in Colorado with his best friend. At Evergreen he and his fellow 3rd teammates: Eben Heasley, Wendy Barnes, and Deidre designated 3rd grade the official  “Hoopmasters”, who year after year, teach the rising 3rd graders to carry the CTH torch!

Chris turned this Friday game into a Sunday afternoon family fun day, where as many as 60 parents and children met at a nearby park, after it got too big for the school field. Chris was gifted at using play, creativity,  love and compassion,  both in the classroom and in life,  to bring communities together.

Chris passed away on Sept. 20, 2017. We honor his legacy by continuing to start each game with a pledge. It varies, but always includes these important agreements:

“ We solemnly promise to

  • play fair

  • play safe

  • have excellent sportspersonship

  • be honest. (Tagger Tells the Truth is a very important rule!)

  • And most importantly: Have Fun!”

Click on Coney below to see real time numbers on how your classroom team is doing! Kindergarten and Second Grade are leading the way, can any other class unseat them!? Fourth Grade, you’re really close!

Looking for Volunteers!

Looking for VOLUNTEERS the day of the event. If you’re available on March 31st, please sign up here! We are especially in need of people to play “Coney.” The kids love Coney- it should be really fun!

Also in need of Cheerleaders- we have signs left over from last year- the cheerleading slots are really just an rsvp that you are attending, and intend to holler “GO”!!!

Congrats to Kindergarten and Second Grade, your classes have hit their grade level goal of $5,500 and we will be planting a tree on campus in your honor!

Today the kids learned a little bit about Red Maple Trees!

Connection-Seeking Perspective

Every time you think of calling a kid ‘attention-seeking’ this year, consider changing it to ‘connection-seeking’ and see how your perspective changes.
— Jody Carrington

This powerful quote by psychologist Dr. Jody Carrington is one that continues to set the tone for our work with students, staff, and parents. This thought invites us to rethink the way we view our children's behaviors. It's common to label certain behaviors as attention-seeking, especially when our children interrupt us, ask for our attention repeatedly, or act out in ways that demand a response. But what if, instead of thinking about these moments as frustrating, we viewed them as an opportunity for connection?

Children, like all of us, have an innate need to connect with others. When they seek our attention, it's often because they are trying to bridge the gap between themselves and the important people in their lives—us. They may not always know how to ask for connection in the best way, but their actions are often an expression of a deep desire to be seen, heard, and understood.

By shifting from seeing these behaviors as "attention-seeking" to "connection-seeking," we can change how we respond. Instead of feeling overwhelmed or annoyed, we can approach our children with curiosity and compassion. What are they trying to tell us? How can we meet their need for connection in a way that is healthy and constructive for both of us?

Here are a few ways to implement this shift in perspective:

  1. Pause and Reflect: When your child seeks your attention, take a moment to think about what they might really need. Are they feeling disconnected or anxious? Are they looking for reassurance or simply want to share something with you?

  2. Respond with Empathy: Instead of reacting with frustration, try to meet your child’s need for connection with understanding. Let them know you see them and that you are there for them.

  3. Create Moments for Connection: Try to intentionally carve out time during your day to connect with your child. Whether it’s a shared activity, a conversation, or simply sitting together, these moments can go a long way in preventing "attention-seeking" behaviors from escalating.

  4. Model Healthy Communication: Show your child how to express their needs appropriately. When you need attention or connection, be open and clear about how you ask for it. This teaches them valuable skills for managing their emotions and interactions.

Resources:

We know that relationships and secure attachment to caregivers are some of the most critical ingredients for healthy social-emotional, cognitive, and physical development. "A Child's Bad Behavior Isn't Attention-Seeking..." , and Search Institute’s,  "Developmental Relationships Framework”, offer insights and tools to build powerful relationships and provide connection in those moments when it is most needed.

We hope this small shift in perspective will help strengthen the connection between you and your child, and encourage an environment of understanding and compassion in your home.

Tourney of the Hoops Spring Fundraiser

In just 2 weeks, we’ll kick off our Tourney of the Hoops Fundraiser and a full school Spirit Week on March 24th! Our goal is to raise $50,000. This money helps our school reconcile the actual cost of educating our children in a meaningful way versus what we receive from local, state, and federal bureaus to do so, and strengthens our school community.

This year, fundraising is more critical than ever to provide learning resources and fund our school budget. If your family is not in the position to financially support the school, that’s ok. Evergreen Families can actually support our school by also SHARING about our fundraiser with friends and family online.

Here’s what all students can get excited about:

Spirit Week! Middle School is planning an exciting Spirit Week that maximizes fun while minimizing stress for parents by choosing themes that do NOT necessitate purchases/elaborate preparations.

Game Day! Grades 3-8 will be playing Capture The Hoops, a unique Evergreen tradition, Grades K-2 will be enjoying a Hoopy Loopy Dance Party in the Gym! This high-energy event will give our students a much needed boost of fun!

Planting a class tree! Thanks to Asheville Greenworks, grade levels that meet their grade level goal of $5500 will have a tree planted on campus in their honor. These trees are the first step in restoring the precious canopy that was lost here on campus, and in our region.

Western North Carolina lost so much tree cover due to Helene. This video is a great reminder of what makes our region so special and what is at stake due to this massive loss of habitat.

Sharing IS supporting!
Together we grow back greener!

Key dates to remember:
